This is the jumpstart gig of 2008.
A lot of people have been asking us how to join Rock Ed and I've had a hard time explaining that one need not join an existing project to become a volunteer; most projects are already well-oiled, lean and mean with the necessary 300. So it is good to know that you can actually create your own project with or through us. Since we don't have administrative funders, (so no one's foot is on our throats and no need to sell out ideas) we need those who spearhead their own projects, the ones who don't wait for a task list. Initiative is the key. Tell us what you think should be done. Tell us if you have the resources for it--then do it. If not, we can take the idea to a group who can do it with you.
So, this gig here is a practice-venue for potential group bookdrives. Practice muna tayo. Buwelo. Sagot namin yung gig, sagot niyo ang kolektahan ng mga lumang libro para sa mga public school at mga preso.
Anyway, here's some info: This is the debut of Raimund Marasigan's cover band (together with Myrene Academia, Diego Mapa, Rico Blanco et al) SANDING ON A WITCH! Ah how fun. Chillitees, Peryodiko, Area5 and Dr. Mindbender. Performers performing -- nothing like it. Doing what they love. Ah yeah.
I overheard one time in the backstage, two student musicians debating about the value of a band that plays orginal music as opposed to a cover band --
(En garde!)
MUSICIAN 1 (recently disbanded): "if you're just gonna play covers, wag na, tumugtog ka nalang sa lobby ng 1-star hotel haha, ako tutugtugin ko lang sarili kong music...magbubuo ako ng banda after this month....or after I finish writing the songs for an album...."
(Riposte.)
MUSICIAN 2: "...dude, ewan ko lang, tama ka siguro but...I think actually having a cover band sure beats just talking about forming one..."
(Touche.)
Some say that over-achievers are mediocre people who have an excess of drive in them. While snobbish-intelligent under-achievers are ...well...exactly just that ....under-achievers. Ouch.
I read somewhere, that someone was berated for the way she was doing things. And her reply? "I like the way I'm doing things, more than the way you're not." clink*
The best advice I've ever gotten is this: Your life? DIY.
